Japanese and European Notebook Brands
Our Japanese notebooks include Hobonichi, known for its feather-light Tomoe River paper, and Midori MD notebooks, with smooth cream paper that suits fountain pens. Stalogy, Apica and Mnemosyne round out the range. From Europe, Leuchtturm1917 adds numbered pages and a built-in index, while Rhodia and Clairefontaine bring smooth French paper. For a refillable system, see the Traveler's Notebook range.
How to Choose the Right Notebook
-
Size: A5 is the best all-rounder, B5 gives you more desk space, and A6 slips into a pocket. Our guide to A5 vs. B5 vs. A6 notebook sizes explains the difference.
-
Layout: Lined suits meeting notes, dot grid suits planning and bullet journals, graph suits diagrams, and blank suits sketching.
-
Paper: Fountain pen users should look for thicker or coated paper that resists bleed-through, such as Tomoe River or MD paper.
-
Use: For the desk, see our picks for notebooks for the office. For daily writing, our guide to journaling methods pairs each method with a notebook.
Most notebooks here cost between about $15 and $50, with pocket notebooks from under $10 and leather Traveler's sets at the top end.
